Everyone is talking about Beyoncé. As if having another child wasn’t enough, Queen Bey decided to drop the sudden news that she was not having one, but two new additions to the Carter family.
On Wednesday the singer made an unexpected Instagram announcement that she is having twins with her husband Jay-Z. The image was an instant hit and shortly after her news was the topic of conversation online for hours.
In the iconic photo, the singer kneels in front of a floral wreath wearing lingerie and a green veil rubbing her stomach. “We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes ” the Carters wrote in the caption of the post.
Shortly after the photo was released, the news went viral. In less than an hour, the photo generated more than 2.4 million likes on Instagram broke the record for the most-liked photo on Instagram. Twitter erupted with hilarious memes and #Twins became one of the top trending topics as news outlets and online networks quickly reported the news.
Twitter data tweeted 45 minutes after the announcement this: “Half a million Tweets about @Beyoncé’s surprise #twins announcement. It’s been 45 minutes. (Spiked at 17k Tweets per min.)” To see some of the funniest posts on Twitter surrounding Beyoncé’s news, check out Billboards recap here.
With close to 9.9 million likes on Instagram, Queen Bey’s pregnancy photo surpassed pop star Selena Gomez’s 6.305 million likes as the most liked photo on Instagram. The best part is that Beyoncé broke that record in seven hours.
Beyoncé is constantly in control of her own image and this post confirms that. The star rarely accepts interviews and it comes to no surprise that she shared that she is expecting directly to her large fan base.
Let’s not forget Beyoncé’s surprise 2011 MTV Video Music Awards pregnancy reveal after performing “Love on Top,” as she unbuttoned her jacket, dropped the mic, and rubbed her belly confirming the speculated news. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can watch the video here.
However, there are still many unanswered questions surrounding the big news. Beyoncé failed to mention the due date and whether her pregnancy will affect her Grammy’s performance or the two Saturdays that she is scheduled to headline Coachella.
Beyoncé is headed for a faceoff against Adele in four categories and leads the pack with nine nominations and the queen does not like to lose. Many speculations around whether the Coachella event crew knew of Beyoncé’s pregnancy have been silenced, as the star plans to follow through will her performance as promised.
In the case of Beyoncé, social media became her press conference. I mentioned above that she declines almost all interviews and controls when she is and is not in the media spotlight. The good news is that online newsrooms provide a space for communication and speculation surrounding the star. The bad news is that the holes in her story are details that only she can reveal truth to.
